3 Things Every Couple Should Do and Discuss Before Plastic Surgery

Deciding to undergo plastic surgery is an extremely personal choice and should only be made if the individual has done his or her research and has realistic expectations. However, sometimes spouses and close friends might object to plastic surgery and even argue about it. In other instances, spouses may remain neutral, indifferent and silent about their opinions in relation to your surgery. Regardless of what your spouse or close friends think, the procedure you are deciding to undergo should benefit you and help you restore a positive self-image. Here are a few tips that couples should discuss and do prior to plastic surgery.

  1. iStock_000003193978Small-300x161Explain why you are choosing plastic surgery. Simply telling you spouse, “I’ve always hated my nose,” or, “I don’t look like myself after the baby came,” usually isn’t enough of an explanation because they are likely to say, “But I love you just the way you are.” Try to dig deeper and provide your spouse with examples of how you feel about what you want to change. Sometimes explaining that, “I want what I see in the mirror to reflect how I feel inside,” or, “I have been ridiculed for my nose since I was little,” can help provide a deeper explanation to your spouse about why you are choosing plastic surgery.
  2. Show your spouse that you’ve done your research. Your spouse loves you and is likely to worry about you undergoing surgery. All surgery comes with associated risks, but plastic surgery risks can be minimized by choosing a board-certified plastic surgeon who has expertise in the procedure you have selected. Sit down with your spouse and show him or her your surgeon’s website to read his or her curriculum vitae and biography.
  3. Take your spouse with you to your consultation. This is beneficial in three ways. First, you are likely to feel more at ease with your spouse by your side. Secondly, your spouse will have a chance to meet your surgeon. Thirdly, your surgeon is allotted an opportunity to assure you and your spouse that you will be well taken care of during your procedure.
