Are Facial Implants for You?

Facial implants are designed to enhance certain features of your face, such as your cheeks or jaw line. Full cheeks and a strong jaw line are often associated with a more youthful appearance, and enhancing these features can improve a person’s appearance – along with their self-esteem. Good candidates for facial implants are patients who are in otherwise good health, with realistic expectations about what surgery can do for them.
Facial implant surgery is performed on an outpatient basis, under either local or general anesthesia. This procedure is tailored to the patient’s specific desires and needs.
Types of Facial Implants:
- Lower jaw implant. This facial implant is placed inside the lower lip. The incision site is secured with sutures that will dissolve on their own in about a week, and the procedure takes about 1 to 2 hours to complete. Lower jaw implants can help restore definition and strength within the jaw area.
- Cheek implant. This implant is placed through either the upper lip or the lower eyelid. The procedure takes about an hour to complete. Cheek implants can have a major impact on the appearance and self-confidence of a person whose cheeks have become thinner or sunken, due to age, illness, or other causes.
- Chin implant. This implant is placed through your lower lip, or underneath the chin, and takes about 30 minutes to an hour to complete. Chin implants can also help restore a person’s facial harmony.
Although facial implant surgery is considered quite safe, some patients may experience minor swelling, numbness, skin discoloration, and discomfort following the procedure. The recovery process from facial implant surgery is considered fairly quick, with most patients only needing a week to fully recover.
